When do you start feeding baby, food?

My daughter in law came home from a friend of hers, with baby food and started feeding her baby (31/2months) a jar of carrots. I say she should have discussed it with the doctor first. I thought you start out feeding cereal first, fruit and then vegetables, But its been a long time since i had a baby and a lot has changed. Can anyone give us advice?

They say to start feeding babies no sooner than 4 months. From what I understand, you can start a baby on solids anywhere from 4-6 months of age. Many argue not to start before 6 months, but if you start at 4 months, that’s really okay, and doctors won’t really argue with you to wait.

Typically you start baby out on cereal first. It’s sort of the introduction to food for them. The first few feedings, you’re suppose to make the cereal pretty runny, and then gradually bring it to a normal consistency. After they get use to cereal (maybe just 1 feeding a day) you can decide when to start adding other foods.

My mom said that with all 5 of us kids, she did the cereal, fruit, and vegetables in that same order you listed. I hear people say nowadays that it’s veggies before fruit. However, nowadays when you go to the store for baby food, you will see the baby food jars seperated into different stages. Stage 1 and stage 2. Stage 1 is for babies of 4 months of age. From what I remember, it was mainly vegetables, but there was stage 1 applesauce and I think stage 1 prunes. But like I said, I noticed more vegetables. Stage 2 is for babies who are 6 months old and older. Stage 2 had a widder variety of vegetables and fruits, and it got into the meat and rice baby food . . .

So, maybe nowadays "experts" aren’t so fixed on a set order (fruit first, veggies next, etc.) . . . It seemed kind of mixed around to me.

My son is 4 months old and I occassionally feed him baby oatmeal. I decided to not start him on regular solids until he turns at least 5 months old.

My mom had 5 kids. She breastfed for 7-8 months, started us on solids at 3 months, and had us on cows milk at 7-8 months. We are all strong, fit, healthy young adults. Will I do the same thing with my son, that my mom did with me? Probably not. I don’t really criticise moms how they choose to feed. Every mom does their own thing. It’s not my kid, so it’s not my responsibility.

never feed a child under the age of 6 months anything but formula or breastmilk due to the risk of food allergins….and you have to be careful what you start to feed them on…no nuts, cow milk, honey, citrus, berries, eggs…

Did she talk to her doctor and you just don’t know that? The only problem with feeding a baby under 6 months carrots specifically is all the nitrates they contain…baby’s bodies can’t handle a lot of nitrates until they are 5 to 6 months(as per my doctor)
typically she should be starting with cereal and then veggies and then fruit. But not until a doctor advises her. My son was started at 4 months, with cereal, and so on. The "rules" state that you shouldn’t start babies on food until 6 months. Even though you are concerned, she is the mother of the child. I would maybe recommend she talk to her doctor, but she might not want people ‘butting’ in.

    6 months

Cereal is no longer considered necessary at all. I’m not sure why your daughter is feeding pureed food now.

everyone is going to tell you something different. asking the pediatrician would be the best thing to do. however, ultimately, it’s going to be the mother’s decision. she should be warned about possible allergies and the fact that the baby’s digestive system is not really ready to process foods yet; they will just pass right through, and possibly cause gas, pain, etc. on their way. until you can talk to the pediatrician, stop with the food and just use formula or mother’s milk…

Following the advice of my babies doc I started feeding her rice cereal at the age of 4 months and then introduced vegetables at 5 months and will soon start fruit, all babies are different and many doctors have varying opinions on what and when you should feed your baby, so I would definatly discuss it with the doc before starting baby on food.

my dr. said nothing but formula and cereal until 6 mo’s and then start with green veggies and fruit..only introducing one new food every 2-3 days..that way if the baby has a reaction to it..you’ve only given them one food so you know what they’re having a reaction to as opposed to them having tried so many different foods you have to go back through and try them one at a time to see what caused the reaction.
