Why is my mother in law obsessed with feeding my baby things?

what is it about feeding a baby that people just feel like shoving food in their mouth no matter what it is? she wants to feed him anything she has in her hand even right after the baby has eaten a full meal.

why are people so obsessed with feeding babies? you wouldn’t walk up to a 7 year old and just start feeding them for fun so why do people do it to babies?
and why do people feel like they have a right to just start feeding someone else’s baby?

I’m glad I’m not the only one! We were at a birthday party yesterday, and my mother-in-law fed my daughter cake… Now, I’m not one of those people who will never allow her child to have sweets, but I would’ve given her a TASTE of it – not a whole piece! And, I think she should’ve asked me first. She also didn’t put a bib on her, and got chocolate icing on her sweater. Grr.
We went out to dinner this past weekend with the in-laws, too, and they kept trying to make her eat things that she doesn’t like and that aren’t even good for her! My husband never speaks up, so I’m always the one who sounds rude when I’m like "She has plenty of her own stuff to eat" or "I’d rather her not fill up on bread and crackers when she has nutritious food in front of her that she would be perfectly happy eating if you would stop shoving that crap in her face!" Ha.

I know. It really angers me when people pressure mothers to formula feed as well just so that said relatives can feed/bond with the baby. Feeding baby = parent’s job. There are enough other things that family members can do!

I know what you mean, do you know how many times I caught my MIL feeding my son when he was like 5-6 mo’s old…. bites of her toast with PEANUT BUTTER! Or when she was done drinking out of her coffee cup she would let him play with it…. Number one its a hard glass cup, and # 2 it still had bits of sugary coffee in it!
She had no common sense we bump heads often on what can be given to him and what can’t be!

Now that he is almost 2 its things like candy that she shoves down his throat!

My mil always tries to tell me what to do. She tells me to let her eat this or let her play with that. We always butt heads over it. She always says you cant raise her to be afraid of people let her have freedom. Sometimes i wish i had the freedom my daughter has to punch her in the face, seriously i am not kidding. She always wants to tell me how to raise my child. What did i do?
I moved away with my daughter now she hardly sees me or my daughter the last time she has seen her was christmas day.

My mil and i have problems because she treats me like shit compared to her other prized daughter in law and she is controlling and because i wont let her control me as she wants to she finds faults, but i dont let it bother me.

then, when my daughter was 13 months old i caughter her letting my daughter sip her MIMOSA!!!!

Because seeing a baby have their first taste of a new food is really exciting :) If it’s not a new food, it’s just her nurturing instinct coming through. Of course, it’s the parents decision on when and what to feed, but grandparents often overstep their boundaries not even realizing that they are doing something wrong.

I’m right there with Carrie. Only my mil is the one who follows my instructions with my son and feedings, it’s my mom that doesn’t. Irritating to say the least. She tried feeding frosting to him at 4 months old. Whole milk (and he’s lactose intolerant) and sugar and eggs. Ah, the joys of motherhood. (insert eye roll here)

Why people are so obsessed with feeding babies- it’s cute. It’s fun. They can eat whatever they want because "fat" doesn’t matter. I don’t know why people feel like they have a right to feed other people’s babies. I’ve certainly learned to keep my hands off others’ babies now that I’ve had my own rather crappy first hand experience.

I don’t know why she does that but I agree that it’s rude to feed a baby anything without asking mom first.

Ugh, I’m with you! My son is almost 7 months old, and all my mother in law has been talking about for months is giving him one of her meatballs. My husband and I are trying to be careful about teaching him good eating habits, since most of the people in our families are unhealthy. But she has tried to give him a cookie (I caught her before she was able) and keeps saying she’s going to give him a lollipop. At this point, I feel like I have to be on guard around her to make sure she doesn’t give him anything we’re not ready to give him.

I don’t understand why someone would feed a baby anything without checking first with the parents. Of course, the older generation’s answer to everything is, "I gave my kids X at 6 months old and they turned out just fine!"

i think it is part of the era they grew up in where it was normal to feed babies at such an early age. of course the way they raised their kids was the right and only way.(not) i also want to know what is the rush in getting babies on solids. there needs to be no rush. i am waiting for my 7 month old son to show the signs he is ready to eat.
    -pincher grasp
-sits up well on his own
    -grabbing for food
i want him to be able to contribute to most of the feeding under my watchful eye. he has his whole life to eat solids. i am in no rush. feeding time with baby shouldn’t be a chore either.

I know someone who’s MIL watches her two kids. The one has a severe milk allergy and yet the MIL still continues to feed him things he can’t have, even though the older daughter (who is almost 6) speaks up about it. To me, that’s neglect! To not listen to the wishes of the parent, especially when there’s an allergy present, is terrible. I sometimes wonder if she just thinks her DIL made it all up or something.

Anyway, I have a big thing about people feeding my children things. At our Christmas party this year, I warned people not to let my 2-year-old just grab things off the tables if she saw them, otherwise she’d be eating nothing but cookies all night long. For some reason my sister thinks it’s okay to let my son have his fourth brownie of the night or whatever, and I"m like, "hello, *please* don’t do that!" I can’t always follow the kids around on a night like that when there are so many adults present, and usually my son will ask if he can have something. In which case, I would hope the answer would be, "Go ask your mother," instead of "Here kid, have another!" *sigh*

My MIL does the same thing! I don’t know why she just insists on feeding him all the time! It’s strange how people do that… we were at a restaurant one time and some woman beside us started feeding my son potato wedges!

Ahh! I asked this exact question a little while back. My MIL has now resorted to grocery shopping for my daughter. I she buys blueberries, crackers, pasta, jello (told her no thanks, the first ingredient was sugar). I said something to my husband and his take on it was let her be, she doesn’t have anything else to do. I think Theresa got it right about some people showing love through food.

Ughhh!! I know EXACTLY how you feel!! I’ve told my boyfriend that if he doesn’t say something to his mother, I will and it wont be pretty.

Since about 4 months shes been trying to feed her Goldfish crackers. And she also let her drink chocolate milk!!! Who does that!? She also tried to give her Honey Nut Cheerios!!
    I was livid!

It’s like… my daughter can barely chew/swallow an arrow root cookie without gagging, let alone cheerios that she’ll more than likely choke on!

Her thing is "Well, we all did this for our babies when they were young and they turned out just fine" Yeah! Thats because you’re the mommy and YOU made the decisions!

I’m afraid to leave my daughter there (Now 7 months) in fear of what she’ll be trying to shove down my baby’s throat!!

I was soooooooooo pissed. I totally went off on her in the middle of Wendy’s. Like he seriously needed a french fry at 3 months old!!!!!
